The Georgia Street project in downtown Indianapolis is pushing full steam ahead right now! I figured that since we cover the mundane and complain about the smallest of things that we should also be celebrating projects that stand on their own as great projects. The New Georgia Street: An Urban Design Crit.

In case anyone hasn’t noticed, Georgia Street in downtown Indianapolis is currently getting an extreme makeover and turning large portions of its right-of way over to the pedestrian.  Announced in early May of this year, this project has been touted as the latest example of Indianapolis taking positive steps in turning their downtown into a more pedestrian friendly environment.  Taken together, the Cultural Trail and the Georgia Street makeover prove that Indianapolis is on the forefront of the pedestrianization acceleration movement sweeping across the United States.  New York has...

Georgia Street Plan

Most readers are probably already aware of the plan to reconfigure Georgia Street, but if you haven’t seen it, take a look here. It’s a fine idea, as the street has little auto traffic, and the pedestrian environment downtown could certainly use a place that serves as an outdoor room. I hope it can be successful long past the Super Bowl.
