Broad Ripple Mixed Use Structure Construction Update

In February, Urban Indy reported on a new structure in the planning phases that would take the place of a former liquor store at the intersection of Broad Ripple Ave, the Monon Trail and Winthrop Ave.
I am pleased to provide this update showing the progress that has been made towards completing the first addition to Broad Ripple Ave in many years. As you can see from the photo, a tall elevator shaft has been erected and several other supportive pieces are in place.

Ambitious Central State Development Approved

Last week, the Metropolitan Development Commission approved a massive redevelopment of the Central State Hospital grounds. According to the staff report, the grounds will include a brewery, an events center, student housing, office uses, and urban farming. Fall Creek Trail South – Construction Update

By any objective measure, the Fall Creek Trail southern extension, from the Monon Trail to Central Avenue, would not be considered complete.
But as of this posting, I can confirm that the entire length of this extension has been paved. Some portions appear to be completed while others still need an additional layer however, a determined cyclists could bypass the “sidewalk closed” signs and ride this portion.
The photo above was taken from the Monon Trail looking south, as is passes over the newly paved Fall Creek Trail. Hopefully cyclists and pedestrians will be able to take full advantage...

It is often easy to get caught up in big ideas and big money. City, state, and nation-wide investments are all needed to really make an impact. However, recently there have been a few new smaller items that can also improve life for city residents.

Monon Trail Receives Safety Upgrades

Regular users of the Monon Trail may or may not notice the results of a new project aimed to improve safety for cyclists and pedestrians at street crossings. As part of a larger project, which is funded primarily from the Highway Safety Improvement Program, upgraded pavement markings, signage as well as the addition of flashing beacons at select intersections are being deployed.
As cyclists, one of the biggest concerns for trail riding are where cross streets that carry automobiles intersect. Increasing awareness for motorists that pedestrians and cyclists have priority in these crossings is key...
