Super Bowl 46 demonstrates The Power of Programmed Spaces
Super Bowl 46 descended on Indianapolis in late January 2012 and the city was ready. As Urban Indy has reported on frequently over the past year, the city was ready with the reconstruction of a 3 block street downtown from a formerly sleepy 4 lane street to a full on pedestrian boardwalk of sorts. Georgia Street was designed to handle the type of events that the Super Bowl would bring with it. Namely, TONS of … Read entire article »

Cincinnati Breaks Ground on Modern Streetcar
Cincinnati officially broke ground on it’s modern streetcar system on Friday February 17th, 2012. The ceremony took place in the street in front of Memorial Hall in the heart of the historic Over the Rhine neighborhood. The location was fitting as streetcar tracks from yesterday’s system still reside in the brick paved street in front of Memorial Hall and made a great setting for what will continue a tradition of multimodal transportation options for the … Read entire article »

I’m going to keep posting these, as it seems like there was good turnout for the last meeting. This one will focus on College Avenue from 49th Street southwards towards 40th Street. Next week, this site will look at each of the College Avenue corner nodes in detail for a new series. The notice for the next meeting (which takes place at the College Avenue Library at 6:30 next Monday, the 27th) is attached at the bottom of this post. CollegeSouthNotice (1) … Read entire article »

Transit Rally at Statehouse tonight!
An Urban Indy reader chimed in recently stating that he was holding a rally on the steps of the Statehouse this evening. According to the reader, Johnathan Katz, “Let’s encourage our legislators to pass some legislation that will actually pass jobs. A mass transit plan for Indianapolis has bi-partisan support and will create scores of jobs, both for the plan itself, and help facilitate commerce for the area. Mass Transit will create REAL jobs for central Indiana, both in the short-term … Read entire article »

Indy a World Class City? Not without good rapid transit
If you are a reader of Urban Indy, then you are most likely a supporter of public transit improvements and thus, have more than likely kept up with the ongoing saga that has been building momentum in Central Indiana for the past two years. I am referring to Indy Connect, the regional plan to improve mass transit for Indianapolis and it’s surrounding counties. Hundreds of public and private meetings have set the state for the … Read entire article »

National Call-In day to Oppose HR7 – House Transpo Bill
Transportation for America has designated today as National Call In Day to oppose HR7, the American Energy and Infrastructure Jobs Act. If you are not in tune with what is going on at the national level on transportation funding, this is the Federal Government’s plan for funding all types of infrastructure from roads to transit to sidewalks and everything in between. The current proposal on the table was put together by the majority Republican party and … Read entire article »

Indianapolis as a Can-Do City.
Indianapolis has pulled off a nearly-impossible task: hosting a Super Bowl in a cold weather city without a week-long barrage of complaints from sports journalists. A notoriously fickle bunch had glowing reviews, and left them wondering how we did it. That was a surprise to me, as my initial reaction when Indy won the rights to host the 2012 Super Bowl was one of dread of the potential for negative press. But the city shined, … Read entire article »
